Ingrown hairs: why they keep coming back, and how the laser ends it

Consultation pour une épilation laser chez Épilsoft.
Bumps on the bikini line, dark spots on the neck, redness returning after every shave: ingrown hairs are not inevitable, but they are often tackled the wrong way round.

A bikini line that turns red two days after waxing, small bumps on men’s necks, dark spots on the legs: ingrown hairs are one of the most common reasons people come to see us — often before the question of hair removal itself.

What happens under the skin

An ingrown hair is a hair that failed to get out. Instead of piercing the surface it curls back and grows inwards, or stays trapped under a layer of skin. The body reacts as it would to a foreign object: redness, a small bump, sometimes a painful inflammation.

Three factors encourage it:

  • Curly or coiled hair, which naturally tends to turn back towards the skin rather than growing out straight.
  • Shaving, which cuts the hair at an angle and gives it a sharp tip, ready to dig in.
  • Thick skin or friction — tight clothes, seams, sweat — which closes the follicular opening.

Why the usual solutions fall short

Exfoliation helps, but it works on the surface: it frees a hair that is already stuck, without stopping the next one from getting stuck too. Anti-ingrown creams do the same thing, slightly more effectively.

Tweezers are the worst reflex: you reopen the skin, keep the inflammation going and increase the risk of a post-inflammatory mark — that small dark patch which lingers for months, and is particularly visible on darker skin.

As for wax, it pulls the hair out with its root, but the new hair then has to break through skin the wax has irritated. The cycle starts again.

What all these methods have in common: they deal with the hair that is already there, never with the one about to grow.

What the laser does, and why it is different

The laser neither cuts the hair nor pulls it out: it neutralises the follicle. A treated follicle no longer produces hair — and a hair that does not exist cannot become ingrown.

That is why the laser is the only method that addresses the cause rather than the consequence. The effect shows quickly: as density drops, flare-ups become rarer, often from the first sessions, before the area is even fully clear.

On problem areas the result is usually very clear: bikini line, underarms, nape, and men’s beard outline, where curly hair and daily shaving form the least favourable combination.

What about the marks already there?

To be precise: a hair removal laser treats hair growth, it is not a depigmenting treatment. What we observe is that marks left by ingrown hairs fade naturally once the source of inflammation is gone — because nothing keeps feeding them. This takes time, and the result depends a great deal on your skin.

If the marks themselves are your main concern, say so at the assessment: we will tell you honestly what the laser can do, and what belongs to a dermatology consultation.

What you can do right away

  • Shave with the grain, with a clean blade and few passes. A blunt blade is a great provider of ingrown hairs.
  • Stop tweezing and waxing — necessary in any case if you are considering the laser, which needs the root in place.
  • Exfoliate gently twice a week, and moisturise: supple skin lets the hair through.
  • Avoid tight clothing on the area just after shaving.

Have the area assessed

Ingrown hairs respond all the better when the inflammation has not been allowed to settle in. At the first appointment, which is free, we look at the state of the skin, choose the device suited to your phototype and tell you how many sessions to plan for.

We welcome you in Uccle, Etterbeek and Watermael-Boitsfort — book an appointment or look at our prices by area.
